I have issues...

with this weather.  I've never been a lover of snow past the age of 6... I was under the impression that everyone else was the same but evidently not.  My Facebook news feed as been flooded with people begging and praying for snow and now it's here they've done nothing but complain!
My issue with this weather, apart from the fact that I'm on a constant panic that I'm gonna fall on my bum in front of people and that it's blisteringly cold, is what to wear.  Honestly, I never realised how actually thin all of my clothes are.  I very, very rarely wear jeans, (I'm a leggings or skirt/shorts and tights girl) you can't be seen in public in your trackys unless you're in the gym and any other trousers I own are like painfully thin material.  This wouldn't be so problematic if I had a coat that covered my thighs, and whilst I do, I much prefer my shorter one and it goes with way more outfits.
So that's my issue basically... what exactly do you wear on your bottom half at this time of year in these freak weather conditions?  If anyone has any ideas, please do let me know.  I'm about to resort to topping off my thermal vest with thermal pants to wear under my leggings... and then I really will have committed fashion suicide.

Balenciaga, the spanish master...

Cristobel Balenciaga, a true genius.  I was lucky enough to be visiting New York when there was an exhibition of his finest dresses in Queen Sofia Spanish Institute on Park Avenue.  It was like walking through a dream world... much like when you walk through the hand bags section in Barney's, except it's not the smell of leather that's intoxicating, it's the sound of silence.  I mean, eery silence.  The building was filled with fashion lovers all quietly gazing in awe of this master.
The dresses were all fabulous, needless to say.  Some were maybe a tad too out there for my taste but the majority of them, well I would have given a body part just to be able to try one on.  As you walked through the exhibition, you could feel the sense of respect and adoration that Balenciaga's designs were receiving.  Quite frankly, I loved it.
I decided to take a little piece of the magic home with me in the form of the Balenciaga hardback they had on sale:
Honestly, it was worth the $45 it cost me. It has photographs of all the dresses that were in the exhibition and more! And pages upon pages of text discussing Balenciaga's inspirations and ideas and his background.  I love it.

Not to mention, just handling the book itself gives me a sense of happiness :) Mock if you will, but I adore Balenciaga. Recently, it's all about his bags and I'm hilariously lucky to have a mother who owns one... which I regularly steal. But back then, it was all about the gorgeous dresses!

Here's a few of my favourite pages from the book:

This one was my absolute favourite dress from the whole exhibition. I think it's absolutely amazing.  It's my birthday coming up, so if anyone's stuck for what to get me? ;)

Pour maintenant, au revoir.

Wednesday 1 December 2010

always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them more.

This quote applies to do much in my life right now. Oscar Wilde; how did you become so wise eh?

Like I said, I went to the big apple. Literally got back this morning so I'm suffering from serious jet lag and I have a hysterical cold that's confined me to my bed... unfortunately this does mean that my plans for todays blogs are ruined. I need to venture downstairs to the scanner and I'm too ill for all that physical exertion so I have adapted as all good writers do and have decided to blog about something that's been puzzling my mind my whole holiday.

All girls, in my opinion, should have a fashion icon.  There's so many people I admire within fashions critical eye; Blake Lively for one. Kate Moss is a given really. Sarah Jessica Parker another obvious symbol of fashion.  However, I'm completely torn between my two favourites.
Hayley Williams and Audrey Tatou. Both completely opposite in their styles yet both impress me with every outfit choice, every risk, every look they create.

The thing is, I think it's because I'm in awe of both of them that my wardrobe has split personality syndrome.  No matter where I'm going (whether it's on a night out, to the shops, a party, roast dinner at my nan's etc) I am torn between my want to emulate Hayley Williams' rock chick, thrown together, so cool I don't care look and my desire to imitate Audrey Tatou's classy sophistication and original femme fatale manner. I'm genuinely not too sure which image I portray best, but I don't care. I'm in love with both of these women for their individual flair that are both so different but both so desirable, by me anyway. The point is, in any one week I could be wearing an oversized, vintage band tee paired with wet look leggings and lace up biker boots, and the next day be seen in a chiffon blouse with a fitted skirt topped off with my mother's pearl necklace.
But what the hell, I enjoy switching between styles as often as the wind changes.  It keeps people on their toes ;)
